In 2022, Laila announced a special corporate partnership with world-renowned wild animal charity Born Free. We are partnering with Born Free to support its global elephant conservation work to help safeguard elephants – majestic, gentle giants which have long been a symbol of India. This is a cause close to our hearts due to our company’s South Asian heritage.
The Asian elephant is classified as Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Born Free and Surya Foods worked together in 2022 for a cruelty-free and animal-friendly Diwali. For the partnership Laila created two elephant themed gifts for its 2022 Diwali campaign including a golden foil wrapped hollow chocolate elephant, made with Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa, and a Laila elephant soft toy (produced using eco-friendly Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester.) 10% of net profits from the sale of Laila’s Diwali chocolate elephants were donated to Born Free’s global elephant conservation work. You can see what a difference this campaign helped make, here, in Born Free’s latest impact report
This Diwali, Laila raised funds for Born Free by donating a penny per bag of Laila rice sold during November 2023 – again raising thousands of pounds for Born Free’s global elephant conservation work.
Laila also continues to raise awareness of Born Free’s Adopt an Elephant programme.
Over the last few years, as part of Laila’s Diwali celebrations, we gifted thousands of Diwali chocolate elephants and elephant soft toys to children’s hospitals and hospices around the country, including Great Ormond Street, The Evelina London and Birmingham Children’s Hospital among many others.
WFA is the affiliated charity of our global business group Flying Trade Group Ltd which operates across several sectors of the UK food and leisure industry – its main subsidiary businesses including Surya Foods and Surya Hotels Ltd.
Since its inception in 2011, World Food Aid has been helping improve some of the millions of lives around the world affected by hunger in the UK and abroad. Adopting the mission statement ‘Hunger – Together we can end it’, the charity considers hunger an entirely preventable pandemic and is on a mission to end it in this generation. It funds projects ranging from soup kitchens and school holiday meals to helping extreme poverty-stricken communities in countries like India and Peru, among others. Funds raised through World Food Aid’s Clacton charity shop are exclusively dedicated to ‘eliminating hunger locally’.
World Food Aid funds worthwhile projects in the UK and abroad and aims to galvanise the UK into becoming a vital part of a worldwide movement to end hunger.
Previous beneficiaries of significant WFA campaigns include the British Red Cross, Fareshare and Trussell Trust.
In 2022 World Food Aid, with the amazing help of the Colchester community, delivered 100k meals to Ukrainian refugees affected by the war in Ukraine. The vital aid was dispatched to Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH), working on the ground to assist internally displaced families, as well as refugees arriving into Poland.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 aims to ‘End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.’ In 2022 Laila Foods launched its ‘Buy a meal, gift a meal’ campaign on selected Laila ready to cook lines in solidarity with this aim. This range is aimed at helping consumers make authentic and tasty Indian food in minutes while, simultaneously, gifting a meal to someone in need.
For every pack purchased, Laila donates a meal to World Food Aid to support underprivileged families and communities in India.

Speaking about the initiative Surya Foods Managing Director, Harry Dulai, said: “This range is aimed at helping UK cooks make authentic and tasty Indian food in minutes while, simultaneously, enabling them to ‘gift a meal’ to someone in need. We wanted to create a really simple mechanic so consumers could instantly appreciate the impact of their gift to underprivileged families and communities in India. Every Laila ready to cook meal purchased helps feed one person in need.”
